Kindle Supports Smarter Book Buying

Joe Wikert (in his “Publishing 2020” Blog) also reflected on the “Publishing Frontier” blog posted by Joe Esposito, about which I wrote yesterday. He disagrees that ebooks will reduce the number of books sold. Wikert thinks the browsing and buying process will change as potential buyers can download samples of books before purchasing them and that this will result in buyers ending up with fewer duds and more good books. This also supports my contention that self-published books will not be negatively impacted by the increasing popularity of ereaders. Books that serve a purpose and fill a niche will be more easily identified, and therefore their sales will remain robust and, perhaps, even increase with the continued growth in the use of this technology.

I couldn't agree more with Wikert. My husband and I currently have 52 sample books lined up on our Kindle, as well as 4 titles we're in the process of reading. The Kindle has made our reading experience easier and faster. My husband is reading more than he has in some time. I'm happily paying $9.99 a download rather than lugging free books back and forth from the library. The Kindle truly has opened a new leaf (pun intended) in the breadth of our reading experience.
